Ingredients

Group: Fruits
  • 5 pounds apples, peeled, cored, and sliced A mix of sweet and tart varieties recommended
Group: Sweeteners and Liquids
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup apple cider
Group: Spices
  • 1 Tbsp. cinnamon
  • 1 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • ½ tsp. cloves
  • A pinch salt

Equipment

  • Large pot
  • Blender or immersion blender
  • Sterilized jars

Method

  1. Start by peeling, coring, and slicing your apples.
  2. In a large pot, combine the sliced apples, brown sugar, apple cider, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt. Stir gently to coat.
  3. Place the pot over medium heat and cook, stirring occasionally, until the apples soften, about 20-25 minutes.
  4. Puree the mixture using an immersion blender or in batches with a regular blender until smooth.
  5. Return the mixture to the pot and cook over low heat for 45-60 minutes, stirring frequently.
  6. To check for thickness, spoon a bit onto a plate; it should hold its shape.
  7. Pour the hot apple butter into sterilized jars and seal tightly. Refrigerate for up to two weeks.

Notes

Feel free to customize the spice levels to your liking, and consider canning if making in larger batches for longer storage.
